counseling and therapy for helpers

who you are

Being a "helper" is not what you do for a living.
It is a way of being in the world.

Whether you are a helping professional, caregiver, parent, or just a naturally helpful and generous person, the world needs you, but it needs a healthy you.

Do any of these statements resonate with you?
  • I feel guilty when I want to take time for myself.
  • I don't feel comfortable asking for or receiving help.
  • I feel exhausted, irritable, shut down, or disconnected from my self and others.
  • If I consider my needs, I feel selfish.
  • I worry that if I don't take care of others, I will be alone.
  • I have a really hard time saying no.
  • Sometimes I feel I have nothing left to give.
  • Sometimes people take advantage of my caring nature.
  • I often don't know what I need or how I feel.
  • I am great and caring for others, but not caring for myself.
  • I have a hard time expressing my needs to others.
  • Sometimes the pain and suffering in the world is almost too much to bear.

common challenges of helpers

  • Self-neglect (inadequate or nonexistent self-care)
  • Difficulty setting boundaries, being assertive, acknowledging or communicating needs
  • Perfectionism
  • Self criticism
  • People-pleasing
  • Feeling disconnected from self
This can lead to a variety of problems like illness, burnout, compassion fatigue, anxiety, or depression.
Healthy helpers: prioritize self-care; are grounded and present; make time for rest and play; are willing to ask for and accept help; assert their needs and boundaries; and are able to serve with a generous heart, for they know they are being cared for too.
